Saratoga Soapstone Care & Maintenance

PRINTABLE COPY

Routine Care and Maintenance

To clean your granite top, a few drops of neutral cleaner, stone soap (available at hardware stores or stone dealers) or a mild liquid dishwashing detergent and warm water can be used. Too much cleaner or soap may leave a film and cause streaks. Rinse the surface thoroughly and dry with a soft cloth. Change the rinse water frequently. Refrain from using abrasive cleaners that will scratch the top.

Spills

Clean spills following normal cleaning procedures immediately.

Preventative Care

Hot items should not be placed directly onto the surface of your top. Trivets or hot pads should be placed under hot dishes or heat generating appliances.

To ensure ultimate performance of your top, cutting directly on the deck of your surface should be avoided. Cutting boards should be used to prevent any unsightly scratches. Placemats should be placed between china, ceramics, silver and other abrasive objects to help prevent scratches and blemishes.

Sealing

Unlike other natural stones, soapstone is non-porous and does not require sealing.

If you would like to keep the countertop its natural color (non-enhanced), you will need to use neutral cleaners to keep the stone lighter as the stone will naturally darken over time around the sink where food and oils hit the stone often.

If you would like to keep the stone from darkening at all over time, use of a light coating of the Firstline Sealer is recommended.

Surface Enhancement

At the discretion of the consumer, application of a surface enhancer can be applied to bring out a dramatic color variation of the soapstone.

Blume’s offers the Saratoga Dry Wax, which has been specifically formulated with all natural waxes (100% organic). This wax is long lasting, non-yellowing, binding and will darken soapstone to a nice luster.

Application of this wax should be done following the manufacturers instructions. It is not required to place a surface enhancer on your soapstone, as this is entirely a personal preference.
